It's not often that dreams come true in life. Today, one of those dreams was dropping not one, but TWO signed publishing contracts into the mail, one for BookStrand, one for Lyrical Press.

These two projects are dramatically different (one is a contemporary romance, the other a paranormal thriller) and are dear to my heart for different reasons. The contemporary romance is one I was beginning to think wouldn't see the light of day, because the hero is in a wheelchair and I portray the story in a realistic way. As the mother of a child in a wheelchair, I have a different point of view on that than most writers. The other, the paranormal thriller, was one that started literally over twenty years when I was in high school as a creative writing project that received an A from the teacher. It's a totally different story now, of course, than it was, but a few similarities remained, like character names and a spooky house. But it's literally the teenage girl's dream finally come true for the manuscript to see the light of day.

As I find out how much I can say and when about the details, I'll keep everyone posted (believe me! *LOL*). In addition to working on the sequels to "Love & Brimstone," I've got a three-book series in progress, and other manuscripts out in submission. Needless to say, I'm going to be kept very busy, between writing, editing, and promoting for the next few months.

I'm definitely NOT complaining! I'm still reeling from the comprehension that yes, I am a fiction novelist.

Feels gooooooooood!

Dark Angel Review for "Love & Brimstone"

*gasping from hyperventilating...*

I have received a fantastic 4-pixie review from DarkAngelReviews.com for "Love & Brimstone!" What a great way to start a new week!!!!

It gets officially listed on their site in the September update, but Amanda said I can advertise it now. Yippee!!

The upshot:

"LOVE & BRIMSTONE is not your traditional vampire romance and I loved the 'new spin' Ms. Richardson creates in her story. She does a great job of creating something new from the old and making it work. She gradually introduces you to her concept of vampires as events unfold in the plot and I really liked that. The pace of the book is just fast enough to keep your interest without feeling rushed. Her characters are well developed and interesting. There is plenty of action and emotion between our two main leads as well as some steamy sex. Taz has to really evolve in the story, everything she has known in her life has basically been a lie, or if not an actual lie just the tip of the iceberg. I really enjoyed the way she deals with everything and found myself rooting for her. Matthias is a good guy and you find everything he has done in the past has been for Taz's protection. Their romance is not smooth sailing and I enjoyed the conflicts and their resolutions as it made their romance very real. LOVE & BRIMSTONE was an enjoyable read and I would love to explore more of Ms. Richardson's offerings." (Click here to read the whole review.)

*thud as I pass out from hyperventilating*

I'm sure Stephen King doesn't do a happy dance in his kitchen...maybe he does. I, however, am not too proud to admit I do. *LOL*

Whoo hoo, another review!

"Love & Brimstone" received 4 tombstones from BittenByBooks.com! Yippee!

"This paranormal plot takes you in plenty of directions, and you never know who is going to attack and when. It has clever twist and turns that will keep you guessing until the end."

This was a great way to start the morning! Yay!!!

Clear (?) skies and writing work habits.

Wednesday, August 20, 2008
Well, we survived the storm. Luckily it wasn't much of an impact on our area. Still have the boards up, but we'll get those down in the next couple of days.

A chance comment and reply to a friend on an email list today prompted me to think about this and toss the question out to the masses. For you writers out there, what is your preferred "work routine" when it comes to your writing? Or do you even have one? Do you sit with your laptop wherever you feel like it, or do you have a highly regimented routine in front of your desktop, etc. Do you have a favorite beverage or food you have to have handy? Music? Candles?

Tell us about your writing work habits in the comments, and feel free to give us a plug for your website or buy link while you're at it. (Hey, don't look a free promo opportunity in the mouth. *LOL*)

While you're at it, if you haven't yet, stop by the Brimstone Series Blog to find out more information about my paranormal romance, "Love & Brimstone."

Hurry up and wait...

Hurry up and wait... "Hey, Mom, can I have ice cream, because you said we need to eat stuff out of the freezer and we don't want it to melt."

You can't argue with a 12 year-old's logic, can you?

So now I'm sitting in my boarded-up house (ie CAVE) waiting for TS Fay (or Hurricane Fay if it strengthens at some point) to make landfall in our neck of the woods. Boarding up might be overkill, but my theory is this: if I'm boarded up, the storm will be weaker than predicted.

This goes with the same logic I have that as long as my generator works, I won't ever need it. Since we've had it, it has yet to be used for a power outage. It's my magic talisman to keep the bad spinny storms away. *LOL*

I truly don't make light of storms, because as a native Floridian and life-long resident, frankly, I'm used to this. And honestly, 2004 was the worst year we'd had in my life. Normally, we don't get a lot of storms. It's safer living in Florida than it is living in some areas of Tornado Alley, when you think about it. At least with a hurricane it gives you the courtesy of advanced notice.

People ask me, "How can you live in Florida with hurricanes?" Well, if you live in an area that gets blizzards, ask me that in the middle of January when a huge ice storm dumps on you and you lose power for over a week and risk freezing to death. *LOL* At least here, if we lose power, we can open our windows. I've never lived anywhere else, don't really desire to live anywhere else (although if I ever make enough money, I'd love a second home near Yellowstone National Park where I can visit all the time). I mean, really, how many natural disasters are courteous enough to give you advanced warning? *LOL*

Aiiiiieeeeeee!!!! My second review!!

Saturday, August 16, 2008
I need to keep a stock of paper bags close by my laptop for hyperventilating.

Even though right now I'm in the middle of preparations for TS Fay (which looks like it's making landfall right over the top of my house) I can find joy in an email containing my second review on "Love & Brimstone!" It received 4 cups from Coffee Time Romance!

http://www.coffeetimeromance.com/BookReviews/Loveandbrimstone.html

Here's the highlight:

"This is a vampire story unlike any other. The whole genetic concept is fantastic, and lends the story a truly realistic element. The characters are completely identifiable, and the reader is hooked immediately. Taz and Matthias are like two pieces of a puzzle that can only come together in just the right way. The forces around them try to tear them apart, but once they click, nothing can separate their love for each other. I absolutely recommend this to any paranormal reader, and can only hope Ms. Richardson is a fast writer!"

*thud as I hit the floor from passing out from hyperventilating*

OMG!

I'm sure Stephen King doesn't dance in his kitchen doing a freaky weird-ass rumba a la Baby in "Dirty Dancing" on the boardwalk scene, but hey, that's what I did!

And tomorrow I have to board up my house. *LOL*

But I've got another great review!! Whoo hoo!!

My first review EVER!!!!!

Monday, August 11, 2008
*That ear-piercing shriek you just heard was me as I read my email.*

This is my FIRST REVIEW EVER!!!!

http://www.paranormalromance.org/reviews/review.php?id=28879

Here's the upshot:

"Lesli Richardson has taken the vampire myths that we all know to a very different level. No more fangs, coffins, or hiding from the sun. This is definitely a skillfully spun story about some new age vamps. You might even find yourself unable to stop reading due to the powers this story will have over you! Love and Brimstone is a powerfully sexy book - a must read!"

AIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*Okay, I'm going to go find a paper bag to breathe into now to stop hyperventilating!!*

Writing and "Real Life?"

(This is my weekly contribution to the Amira Press Says blog at: http://amirapresssays.blogspot.com/ If you haven't stopped by there lately, please go check it out! We have a lot of talented authors at Amira Press!)

***

The powers that be are allowing us to free-range blog this week, so I decided to tackle the subject writers are frequently asked: Where do you get your ideas and character?

As writers, we're told to write what we know. But how many of us are interplanetary travelers, or bumming around with vampires or demons? The truth is, duh, we aren't. That's not to say real life doesn't make it into fiction. Whether it's a character going through the anguish over losing a beloved family member, or writing about an annoying person, real life does make it into fiction no matter how fantastical the topic.

When you read a piece of fiction that truly resonates with you, regardless of the theme or genre, the author has successfully done their job of imparting "real life" into the characters and story. One of the greatest compliments I've ever received is a test reader telling me she cried. I wasn't trying to make her cry, but when I wrote the piece in question, I frequently stopped and wiped my eyes because of what I was feeling as I wrote it. That she felt the same emotion reading it that I felt while writing it meant I did my job. I conveyed "real life" through my words, and that's job satisfaction right there.

Putting words to paper, so to speak, puts our hearts and souls out there for the public to judge. Not just whether our commas are in the right place, or whether our participles dangle, but the content. Any writer who says they don't care if they get a scathing review is either lying or in desperate need of psychiatric intervention, because if they are a "real" writer, they have put their heart and soul into what they offer up for public consumption. Working on the "Brimstone" series, I jumped ahead and actually wrote book six the week after my grandmother died. I didn't mean to do that, but it was a way for me to work through my grief. As a result, the book is even darker than I originally planned. However, I truly think it's a better book than it would have been. One manuscript I'm shopping around is a fictional romance, but the hero is in a wheelchair. My son is a wheelchair athlete, and I deeply explore the world of disability and adaptive sports in a realistic way. My characters frequently have occupations I have either worked at personally, or have a lot of personal first-hand experience with. Most of my characters have at least one aspect carried over from real life, whether it's a trait or an emotion or a job or whatever.

The next time you read something, you might be pining along with a heroine in love with her werewolf co-worker, but you may be reading about a past love the author had. Or if you read about a nasty bad guy, you might be seeing a glimpse of something the writer (or someone close to the writer) went through.

In other words, just because it's fiction, doesn't mean there's not a grain of truth or fact in there somewhere. Always keep that in mind, especially when reaching for a box of tissues.
